I had originally planned for RoT to have some fine cuisine at The Bombay Brasserie but, having checked their menu out on the website after advice from the frugal Vowler, I discovered that you needed to have been in the higher echelons of earnings for the past 20 years to afford it. As we were not armed with a 25%-off voucher from Time Out we decided to select another venue. ?19 for a ruby main course is simply not cost justifiable. | |
| Pub Notes: (Hereford Arms) | So, on the approval of Junior who is a pretending local, we started the evening at The Hereford Arms on Gloucester Road. This looks like a typical London Pub from the outside but inside has been messed around a bit. It was exceedingly smokey and had many well-behaved students drinking and puffing away. However, the Young's bitter was very good indeed. A good contingent included Newtsey, Vowler, Basky, Tomo and Junior, who was soon whisked away by his fiance acting as nurse after his friend's 3-day stag had got the better of him. The highlight was reviewing a letter from lawyers acting on behalf of Ruby Tuesdays, the American restaurant chain, who were worried our popular website may infringe their client's rights. Having accepted we simply review better quality food from curry houses they have agreed to 'monitor' us. We were flattered by their attention though |
| Ruby Notes: | Although the Bombay Brasserie was rejected on cost grounds we were still concerned that the neighbourhood restaurants would still demand much hard-earned brass but we came across Noor Jahan, one of 3 Indian Restaurants opposite the Masserati dealer on Old Brompton Road. Briefly noting the ?100K+ price tags of the Feraris we wondered into the busy restaurant which was full of jolly Kensington types. The menu offered traditional recipes with the odd special and we had a mixture of duck, chicken and lamb dishes all of which were somewhat bland and not possessing the qualities from fresh natural spices. The vegetable dishes were very good though and the papadams were exceptional. Before the main course a political conversation exploded due to Newtsey, with his New Labour hat on, being the only person in the UK other than Gordon Brown to claim that ?1billion spent on the NHS was well spent and that local government personnel were intelligent, capable people, mainly on the basis that they pay his wages. He insisted that the argument should cease when he realised that the well-heeled Conservatives on all the other tables were listening. The evening concluded with us walking through the fantastic mews where Junior has been allowed to live with Newtsey repenting and giving Basky and I a lift to Richmond. |
